Unified East Position Training
Unified East Position Training is designed to provide focused, high-level skill development tailored specifically to each position on the court. These sessions are exclusive to Unified East athletes during the club season and are intended to complement team practices—not replace them.
During the season, weekend position training sessions will be held whenever our National teams are not competing in a tournament. All sessions are led by Coach Brea Staton, with support from the entire Unified East coaching staff to ensure athletes receive detailed instruction, feedback, and game-relevant training.
Why Position Training Matters
Position training allows athletes to focus on the specific skills and responsibilities required for their role on the court—something that can be difficult to fully address during regular team practices.
By working in smaller groups with targeted instruction, athletes gain:
-
More reps specific to their position
-
Clearer understanding of expectations and responsibilities
-
Increased confidence in game situations
-
Better consistency during competition
These sessions are designed to support team success, reinforce good habits, and help athletes grow within their role while still learning how to contribute to the overall system.

Setter Development
Setters guide the offense and set the tone for how the game is played. Position training for setters focuses on building confidence, consistency, and leadership while helping athletes understand how to manage an offense in a variety of game situations.
Training helps setters learn how to deliver hittable balls at different speeds, adjust to pass quality, and make smart decisions that keep all attackers involved. Setters will also work on staying composed under pressure and leading teammates through communication and energy.
Pin Attackers (Outside & Opposite)
Pin attackers are trained to be effective in all phases of the game, whether the pass is perfect or the play breaks down. Position training focuses on helping hitters understand timing, spacing, and how to score using more than just power.
Athletes will work on attacking different types of sets, making smart shot choices, and understanding their responsibilities in serve receive and transition. Emphasis is placed on becoming reliable, adaptable attackers who can contribute in multiple rotations.
Middle Blockers
Middle blockers play a key role in both offense and defense. Position training helps middles develop timing, footwork, and consistency while learning how to stay involved throughout the rally.
Athletes will work on attacking quick sets, transitioning efficiently between blocking and offense, and reading the flow of the game. Training also emphasizes communication and positioning so middles can be effective in team defensive systems.
Defensive Specialists & Liberos
Defensive specialists and liberos are the foundation of ball control and stability. Position training focuses on serve-receive consistency, defensive positioning, and the ability to keep plays alive under pressure.
Athletes will work on reading the game, controlling first contact, and helping the offense stay organized even when plays don’t go as planned. Training also prepares defensive players to step in and help when systems break down.
